About this release

It's the second song I've put my name to with Gemma Isasi, and again she brings the lyrics and the voice. What it's about this time is a love that only shows up when you close your eyes — the kind your mind can build whole, even while you know, as you're building it, that it isn't quite real.

The sea isn't set dressing here. In the lyrics it's the one place where that imagined love can be held for a while and then let go without any drama. That's why the music leans toward the tide and not the storm: I wanted something that rose and fell slowly, that rocked you just enough to let you drift off with the last wave instead of holding you back.

What I like most is that it doesn't end in sadness. There's a point where the voice stops fighting the distance and lets itself sink into the sea — and that sounds less like a goodbye than like rest. It's rare to find a love song that leaves you lighter at the end than at the start; this one manages it, and I'm glad I got to lay the ground underneath it.

Song notes

The hardest part of this song was the sea. It's a worn-out image and it can easily sound like a cliché. I didn't want to imitate waves with the music. I'd rather the song moved a bit like water does, rising, breaking and pulling back, without putting the sound of the sea all over everything.

Gemma's lyric feels very honest to me. It doesn't pretend the love is real: she knows it's a dream and still decides to have it for a while. My job was for the music to keep her company in that, without reminding her all the time that it was only a dream.

The ending stays with silence and the sound of the sea, without settling anything in words. I didn't want a final chord that explained it all, because this song is about letting go. It's the second time I've worked with Gemma and I'm learning something: once the lyric has said it, the best thing I can do is keep quiet.

What you hear at the end, once the music is over, is real waves: an actual recording of waves breaking against the rocks. I did that on purpose. The song is about the sea from start to finish, and that was the ending that made the most sense: a few seconds of just the sea and nothing else. It felt better than fading the volume down slowly like so many songs do.

Lyrics
