About this release
Out of all the trappings of this time of year — lights, shop windows, the usual list — there was only one thing I actually cared about: what happens when you look at someone and, for a second, you don't need anything else to feel like it's Christmas. This song comes from that, not from a tree or a table set for dinner.
It's the kind of song written for one person, even if it plays for everyone. There's cold outside and warmth inside, there's a hug that works as home when the real home is far away or simply changes every year — and there's, above all, wanting that one moment to never end.
I wasn't writing another timeless carol — I wanted a song that could play in any house where two people are looking at each other instead of at their phones for once. If this particular Christmas has one rule, it's that: turn off the outside noise, pay attention to who's in front of you.

When I write something for Christmas I try to dodge the easy trap: snow, presents, the postcard checklist. Here I wanted to hold onto a single image and not let go of it — looking closely at someone and having the rest of the year stop mattering, just for a while.
There's a small kind of miracle in the lyrics, not the spectacular kind: the miracle of the people you love being back in the same room, even if it's only for one night. That's why I lean so hard on the fire, the hug, the voices singing together — I'm not going for a happy ending, I'm going for a moment worth keeping.
It's the most directly sentimental song I've got in the catalogue so far, and I'm not going to apologize for that — some dates don't leave much room for irony. If the chorus sounds repetitive, that's on purpose: I wanted it to stick the way real carols do, the ones you somehow know the words to without ever learning them.
