About this release
Almost everything it's about is small stuff: a note on the fridge that reads 'today's plan', splitting the chores — one waters the plants, the other sweeps the entrance — going down to the corner shop with the cloth bag, brushing hands in the queue. There are no grand promises; in fact, the song gives them up on purpose, settling for talking slowly and looking after each other in the little things.
The heart of the song is a small list of caretaking gestures — holding the other up when they flag, calming them when they get overwhelmed, making room when the plans go sideways — which to me is one of the best definitions of loving well: being there for the small stuff. The music goes the same way: a calm, bright rhythm, two voices handing each other the lines like people splitting up the shopping list. It's one of the few songs in the catalogue you can put on a Sunday morning without it weighing on you at all.
Song notes
I thought of it as a duet because the song is, literally, a conversation between two: one suggests, the other answers, they hand the lines back and forth the way they split the chores. Gemma's voice gives mine the reply it needed; without that second voice, the whole 'same old things, but together' idea would fall flat.
Musically I kept it light and bright on purpose, with a rhythm that walks rather than runs — a strolling, unhurried-Sunday tempo. I didn't want it to sound like a big love song, but like the soundtrack to an ordinary day; to me, that's the kind of love that's hardest to sing without getting corny, and the one I most felt like trying.
One of the reasons I wanted Gemma as the guest voice here is how her range fits with mine. She carries the song from a mezzo-soprano range (roughly G3 to D5), while I come in from a tenor range (around G2 up to F4). Those are the pitches we naturally live in, and you can hear it in the way the two vocal lines cross and support each other.
