Of all the ways to talk about death, I picked the one that scares me the least: thinking of it as a change of state, not an ending. This song comes from imagining what's left of someone — of me, in this case — once the body that used to take up a specific spot is gone.

I liked the idea that 'root' and 'cosmos' shouldn't really get along — one word is about staying put, the other about everything that doesn't fit anywhere — and yet here they do. That's the core idea for me: what anchors you doesn't have to be small or close by; it can be as big as the entire universe and still be yours.

I didn't want to write a sad song about death, I wanted one that sounded almost like a promise. If something repeats through the lyrics, it's that idea of continuing in a different form: not as a ghost, as matter — light, echo, footprint. It's the song where I'm least afraid of the word ending.

This is the song in the catalogue where I go most literally cosmic — constellations, comets, galaxies — and I did that on purpose: I wanted a vocabulary big enough to talk about something ordinary words fall short of explaining.

The lyrics aren't a goodbye, they're a plan: what to do with what's left of you once you can't decide anything else. That's where the root in the title comes in — not something that ties you to the ground, but something that shows you're still growing, even once no one can see you grow anymore.

I wrote the chorus thinking it had to sound like something you could sing at a funeral without it feeling out of place — not out of morbidness, but because I think serious music about this usually runs short on hope. This one has plenty.
