Of all the ways to talk about death, I chose the one that scares me least: thinking of it as a change of state, not an end. This song comes from imagining what remains of someone (of me, in this case) when the body that took up a specific place is no longer there.

I was drawn to the idea that root and cosmos should not get along (one word speaks of staying still, the other of everything that fits nowhere) and yet here they live together. For me that is the central idea: what anchors you does not have to be small or close; it can be as big as the whole universe and still be yours.

I did not want to write a sad song about death, but one that felt almost like a promise. If anything repeats in the lyrics it is that idea of going on in another form: not as a ghost, as matter. Light, echo, trace. It is the song where I am least afraid of the word end.

Song notes

This is where I get most literal with the cosmic (constellations, comets, galaxies), and on purpose: I wanted a vocabulary big enough to talk about something ordinary words only half explain. The lyrics do not tell a farewell, they tell a plan: what to do with what is left of you when you can no longer decide anything else. And I wrote the chorus thinking it had to be singable at a funeral without feeling out of place. Not out of morbidity: I think serious music about this usually lacks hope. This one has plenty.
