Of all the songs in the catalogue, this is the only one that didn't start from something of my own. The lyrics are Gemma Isasi's, and they're about her sister — so my job here was a different one: to listen first, and then build music that could hold her words up without covering them.

The title is literal: twenty-one white roses, one for each year she never got to live. The song is about a life that went out almost as soon as it began, and it does that without melodrama — more like someone laying down flowers than someone crying out loud. I kept the music restrained for the same reason: when the grief is already whole in the words, the last thing they need is underlining.

It's not my place to tell this whole story — it's Gemma's, and she tells it best by singing it. What I can say is what it meant to score it: it's rare to be let into something this private, and all I wanted was not to spoil it. If the song moves anyone, it's because she brought the truth; I just tried to be worthy of it.

Setting someone else's lyrics to music is delicate enough; doing it when those lyrics are about their sister is more so. I spent most of the process taking things away: every time the music got ahead of what Gemma was saying, I pulled it back a step.

I don't sing on this one — Gemma does, and it mattered that you could tell, not as a technical detail but because the person singing is the person who lost someone. I wanted a little tremor to come through, not a flawless take; in a song like this, being in tune matters less than being true.

The roses feel like the heart of it to me — a small, concrete gesture, counting flowers, for something no number can hold. I didn't reach for one of those consoling endings that tie it all up; the song stays with the gesture, which is the only honest thing you can offer. I'm grateful I got to be part of it, and I'm well aware that if it moves anyone, that's down to her.
