What hooked me on this lyric was that Gemma didn't write a Christmas postcard, she wrote an arrival. There's a clear before and after: the cold of the street and the solitude at the start, the warmth of a house and an outstretched hand at the end. My job was for the music to take that journey with her, not just sit there sounding pretty in the background.

So I built the song like a gentle climb: it starts almost whispered, with little underneath, and keeps adding light — strings, a bit of choir, the bells — right as the character gets closer to the door. When they finally open it, I wanted the music to breathe too, the way the knot in your chest loosens. It's one of the times I've most enjoyed lining up the arrangement with the story.

And even though it's a Christmas song, to me it's about something else: those marked days we use as an excuse to do what we don't dare the rest of the year. Showing up at a door not knowing if it'll open is frightening any day; on Christmas Eve, with everything lit up, it feels a little less impossible. I like that the song stays right in that brave moment, without promising anything beyond it.
